Who needs the Kiwi-E-Mart?

In this TV documentary by truTV, Hari Kondabolu, stand-up and television comedian, raises the issue of globally infamous Simpsons character, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

The 50-minute episode is cut with other Indian and South Asian comedians and actors, where Hari uses probing questions to explore the general consensus on the stereotypical representation of these ethnic groups in mainstream media.

In particular, he examines Apu from The Simpsons, as he has felt such a significant, personal harm from the character throughout his childhood. Through his discussions with other comedians, actors, writers, and his family he delves deep into the racism of the character, the problematic decisions of Hank Azaria’s voice acting, and the larger effects these have on general viewers and fans of the show.

This documentary was great. I love discussions about television, and people talking frankly and openly about the problems in the television programmes so many of us love. As well as Apu in particular, Hari and the others discuss further issues with The Simpsons which I found extremely interesting. Hari is of course very funny and presented the issues in a relaxed, watchable yet sincere manner. I’d love to see more TV documentaries like this and will be on the hunt soon.  I’ll be sure to keep you posted.
