Just keep Adult Swimming
Originally created by rapper Tyler, the Creator and Lionel Boyce, The Jellies is now airing on Adult Swim. The Jellies is an animated sitcom following a family of jellyfish and their adopted human son, Cornell. This first episode, “Gangster’s Paradise” was released on October 22nd, with a line-up of only three more episodes to follow this series.
Human Cornell’s jellyfish parents have been fighting. Barry Jelly has been overspending, and his wife Debbie isn’t happy about it. Worried his parents are on the brink of divorce, Cornell is inspired to find hip-hop star Arnez, a favourite of his parents, and convince him to perform for his parents again to remind them of their love for each other.

To find Arnez, Cornell’s music shop owner friend RG takes him to Gangster’s Paradise, a retirement home for 90’s stars. Throw in a showdown in the home’s hallways involving a robot Coolio with laser shooting eyes, and it couldn’t be more Adult Swim if it tried.
Although this was the first released episode, the pilot isn’t out for a couple more weeks. This means that rather than getting a bit of background, we’re thrown straight into the weirdness with no context. But a stack of 90’s cameos is still a good way to set the show’s tone, even if we have no idea what’s going on.
