Sick Note

Impressions: Sick Note

Rupert Grint continues to be miscast

Created by Nat Saunders and James Serafinowicz, this new British comedy series stars Rupert Grint as Daniel, a complete loser with a boring job who likes to smoke, game, sponge off his girlfriend and has the ability to lie in and out of every scenario the world presents him with.

On a visit to see doctor Ted (Nick Frost) about a fraudulent elbow injury, Daniel is given a particularly rude awakening when he finds himself diagnosed with lung cancer. Unsurprisingly, this is a huge shock to both Daniel and everyone around him. As he tries to come to terms with the news, Daniel gradually realises that life gets a lot easier, and everyone is a lot nicer to you when the word’s out you have six months to live.

What Daniel has failed to take into account, however, is that his doctor happens to be the clumsiest, most scatterbrained medical professional around. Needless to say, Ted may have made a slight error in his diagnosis: Daniel is in fact, clear of all illness. After this revelation, Daniel and Ted must negotiate terms to save their own skins. Will the truth come out, or can Daniel sustain his lie and continue to bask in his significantly more pleasant life?

Rupert Grint and Nick Frost in Sick Note
Daniel (Rupert Grint) is misdiagnosed cancer by clumsy doctor Ted (Nick Frost) in Sick Note.

I quite enjoyed this episode. It certainly wasn’t amazing television by any standards, but perfectly entertaining. I get the horrible feeling that Rupert Grint is taking on roles that are completely unsuitable for him (see Snatch), but pushing that to the back of my mind I was quite interested to see how things were going to play out.

This show reminded me of Fresh Meat, without being nearly as clever, although Nick Frost was instantly excellent as the dithering, neurotic doctor with a demanding wife and scary boss. I may not pursue Sick Note, but if it happens to be on, or there’s nothing else on my schedule, then I’d quite happily see it through. Also, no sign of Lindsay Lohan yet (remember her?), who’s rumoured to appear in the show at some point, and I may have to stick around long enough to see what she has to offer to this very British show.
