Crude and obvious
Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) has co-created and stars in a new comedy, Hit The Road, about a dysfunctional family band “Swallow”, struggling to become famous and survive living in close proximity as they tour the country together.
In the first episode, we meet the Swallows: father Ken (Alexander), Meg (Amy Pietz), and children Ria (Natalie Sharp), Alex (Nick Marini), Jermaine (Tim Johnson Jr) and Casey (Maddie Dixon-Poirier). Whilst trying to maintain the facade of the perfect American family, the Swallows are clearly reckless, selfish, vulgar and petty.

At the head of the family, Ken struggles to keep their spirits up as they attempt to book shows, fill seats and nail interviews, all the while making questionable decisions without consulting the family, like selling the family home to buy a tour bus or making some rather unsavoury deals to score free advertisements. With every family member having their own agenda whilst living on top of one another, chaos ensues.
Jason Alexander is a dependable choice and plays a pretty cliched character well here. However, I’m not sure how good this story is going to get. There were good moments, and like every pilot, it may just be a slow start, but ultimately Hit the Road wasn’t funny enough to grab me straight away.
Worth a watch if you like a bit of crude humour and obvious one-liners, but otherwise maybe give this one a miss.
