Big Mouth is a new animated series on Netflix, in which Nick Kroll (The Kroll Show) voices a pre-teen version of himself in a show based on the childhood of him and his friend Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy) at their most awkward stage of life.

As well as Nick and Andrew (voiced by John Mulaney) there are a couple of other recurring characters including their friend Jessi (Jessi Klein), outcast Missy (Jenny Slate) and creepy Coach Steve (also voiced by Kroll). Nick’s parents are also hilarious, giving incredibly honest but embarrassing advice as the boys struggle with who to turn to with their sensitive issues.

When I first heard about the show I guessed it would be about adolescent adventures which included the joys of puberty, I didn’t realise just how much Big Mouth would actually be about puberty, but it turns out we’re looking at about 95% changing bodies and sexual maturity.

Unapologetically awkward, honest and totally nasty, I love it already. It’s also a little surreal—there are some interesting characters that pop up like the “Hormone Monster”, an actual monster, visible to only Andrew, who essentially forces him to start fights, hit on girls and, ah, relieve himself at inappropriate moments. Nick also has an interesting friend living in the attic, the ghost of jazz musician Duke Ellington (for some reason), who gives Nick terrible advice.

All in all the show seems great, in your face and very funny. I look forward to the rest of the cringe-worthy (in a good way!) season.
