Zach Braff’s new show is based on the podcast StartUp

TV shows based on podcasts aren’t a new thing, (just see My Brother, My Brother, and Me, and Comedy Bang! Bang!) but they’re becoming ever more common. Now this would have to be the first about making a podcast about a podcast company. Talk about a snake eating its own tail. Based on the first season of the podcast StartUp all about Alex Bloomberg founding his new narrative podcast company Gimlet Media.

This is Zach Braff’s project. He’s not given up his directing career. He both stars and directs. It’s uncommon for TV shows to have a sole director. Another recent example is the distinct Mr. Robot which has all its episodes directed by Sam Esmail. So if you’re put off by the Braff, you’d best stay well clear.

The trailer sets up family emotional beats against offbeat humour. It feels weird watching it if you’ve heard the formation of Gimlet straight from the horse’s mouth (albeit through headphones). This is not a retelling. Sure his name is Alex, but this is a different beast altogether.

Alex, Inc. is coming to ABC

TV has always been a part of Michael’s life, but since the influx of streaming shows now he can’t stop (someone send help). He also dabbles in films and video games, and has a mean board game collection.

Michael has a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies from Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand. He has previously written about video games for publications including Game Console, Salient, and ButtonMasher.
